Last night, the Neumann-Goretti Saints faced off against the Vikings of Archbishop Wood at the Palestra for the right to call themselves Philadelphia Catholic League (PCL) Champions. Neumann-Goretti, led by Kentucky product Quade Green, was looking to avenge an 82-73 loss from late January. Archbishop Wood had a star of their own in Collin Gillespie, a future Villanova Wildcat who poured in a whopping 42 points in that same late January meeting.
The game got off to a hot start and it would be all Neumann-Goretti going into the half with the Saints up 31-18. Archbishop Wood shot only 6 of 23 from the field and 1 for 12 from behind the arc. The Vikings, determined to overcome their first half breakdown, were able to erase the 13 point lead with an incredible 17-6 run to start off the second half. Led by a Collin Gillespie floater, the Vikings took the lead 43-41, but the game was far from over. The Saints stormed back to regain the lead 50-49, but were given a final answer when Archbishop Wood battled back with an 8-0 run led by a put back from Seth Pinkney. With a 65-58 win, Archbishop Wood captured their first PCL Championship in school history.
The standout player, Collin Gillespie, led the all scorers with 24 points, 22 of them coming in a clutch second half. On the other side, Quade Green finished with 18 points and 7 assists.
